Collections / Archive

The Collections / Archive database holds the stocks of the collections Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, MfGZ (Museum of Design Zurich) and archive of the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, ZHdK (Zurich University of the Arts). In its collections the Museum of Design Zurich preserves stocks of worldwide importance. The main focus of attention is everyday culture in the sense of design.

The Design Collection, the Graphics Collection, the Applied Art Collection and the Poster Collection represent technical and aesthetic developments since the beginning of industrialisation. Posters, graphic works and objects are to be made public via the database as testimony to everyday as well as artistically sophisticated product culture. (www.museum-gestaltung.ch).

The archive of the Media and Information Center imparts the history of the former Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich / University of Design and Art Zurich and the Museum of Design Zurich from their beginnings as the School of Applied Art and the Museum of Applied Art until the founding of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). The database includes exhibitions, parts of class archives, diploma works, photographs and publications on the history of the institution. Documents about the ZHdK cannot yet be researched.

The database is currently under construction and makes a selection of the most important stocks available online. The range will be continually extended. The collections and archive are open to the public on request and may be visited for more detailed research.

The history of visual communication and design is a new area of research and reliable information is rare. Additional and supplementary information is most welcome at any time.
